Ron Beatty

Ron Beatty's most recent public sector role was with New Zealand's electricity market Regulator, the Electricity Commission, which became the Electricity Authority in 2010. He served for almost 16 years, from April 2006 to December 2021, when he retired from full-time employment after more than 50 years in the electricity industry to establish his specialist consulting practice.

During his tenure with the Regulator, Ron was Manager Market Operations until late 2013, with responsibility for the operation of the wholesale and retail electricity markets, market participants, the Code, and the Authority's market operation service providers. He subsequently became Principal Adviser Market Services, a specialist advisory role that he held until his retirement in December 2021.

Ron has been recognised internationally for his contribution to the electricity sector. In 2020, he was nominated as a Global Power & Energy Elite.[1] In 2024, a pioneering electricity market pilot that he designed received a national Energy Excellence Award,[2] recognising its innovation and contribution to the New Zealand electricity industry.

Ron’s experience spans electricity market governance, design and operation, relevant legislation, and market participation, providing a broad perspective on the regulatory and operational issues arising from the development of the New Zealand electricity market.
