New Zealand’s electricity system is evolving from a predominantly centralised model towards one in which distributed and intermittent generation, batteries, flexible demand and other distributed energy resources are increasingly connected at the distribution level. Within this transition, secondary networks and microgrids provide an important, but often misunderstood, component of the electricity system.
