Powering Progress: New Zealand's Largest Battery Energises WEL Networks' Local Grid

New Zealand’s energy landscape is facing major challenges with an ever-growing demand for energy and the increasing integration of renewable sources into the grid and distribution networks resulting in an enormous need for efficient battery management solutions. With over 30 years of experience at the forefront of energy data management, Robotron New Zealand brings its software solutions to life for optimising the storage and distribution of energy. As IT specialists in the field of smart grid technology, the software supports both the transition to cleaner energy sources while maintaining grid stability.

Together with NewPower Energy (NewPower) and Infratec NZ, the leading engineering, procurement and construction company of solar and battery storage in NZ, Robotron NZ implemented a new solution for battery storage management at New Zealand’s largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The battery system stores enough energy to meet the the daily demands of over 2,000 homes and is capable of providing fast reserves support for the North Island grid.

The core of this storage management solution is a module for portfolio management that is part of the energy data management system robotron*esales, which was seamlessly integrated with NewPower's operational workflows. The software solution is designed to manage complex energy projects, ensuring efficient trading and operation of the battery energy storage system (BESS).

As part of the project an innovative trading algorithm was developed by Infratec NZ. This algorithm, tailored to run the BESS based on data inputs from robotron*esales and IoT sensors, optimises revenue streams and operational efficiency.

Data-driven decisions that can be made in real-time play a central role in the success of the project. This agility is crucial in the energy sector, where market and environmental conditions change rapidly. The collaboration between Robotron NZ, NewPower Energy, and Infratec NZ has been pivotal in achieving this milestone.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Robotron. It has been an incredible achievement by all involved to navigate the complex NZ Electricity Market requirements and develop a future proofed electricity trading system that incorporates the innovation that Robotron brings to the table”, highlights the GM of NewPower Energy Ricky Smith.

This solution brings forth a multitude of benefits that enable a more efficient energy storage management model by facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid. Moreover, the project sets new standards for energy storage in New Zealand extending its positive impact beyond local boundaries.
Together with NewPower, Robotron NZ is actively investigating future projects to build upon the existing knowledge and experience. The goal is to develop practical solutions that will help to continue making progress towards New Zealand’s renewable energy targets. By leveraging the insights gained from ongoing efforts they aim to create tailored remedies that address current challenges and anticipate future needs in the renewable energy sector.
